When we think about European ski holidays, southern Spain is unlikely to be the first place that springs to mind. Andalucía means Moorish palaces, tapas bars, orange trees and the Mediterranean rather than chairlifts and piste maps.

But look east from Granada on a clear winter’s day and there is an unmistakably snowy mountain range rising behind the city.

This is the Sierra Nevada, home to Spain’s highest major ski resort and more than 100km of pistes, with skiing reaching to around 3,000 metres. Better still, the lifts are only around 30km from Granada.

That creates the possibility of a very different kind of ski holiday: one that combines several days on the mountain with one of Europe’s great historic cities, the Alhambra, excellent food and perhaps a final evening beside the Mediterranean before flying home.

For skiers who have started to tire of the standard airport-transfer-resort-transfer-airport routine, a week in Andalucía might be worth considering.

A seven-night ski trip with a difference

For a first trip, we’d split seven nights between three bases:

Nights 1–2: Granada
Nights 3–6: Sierra Nevada
Night 7: Málaga

It gives you time to see Granada without rushing it, four days to explore the ski area, and a final night in Málaga rather than finishing your last ski day with a long transfer and an early flight.

You could, of course, simplify things and spend the final night in Granada instead. But Málaga works particularly well for British visitors because of the huge choice of flights, and finishing a ski holiday with dinner outside in southern Spain has a certain appeal.

Days 1–2: Granada and the Alhambra

Fly into Málaga, pick up a hire car and head inland towards Granada. The drive takes roughly an hour and a half, and almost immediately this starts to feel rather different from the usual Alpine arrival.

Granada deserves more than being treated simply as somewhere to sleep before heading to the snow.

The city was the last stronghold of Muslim rule in Spain, and above it sits the Alhambra: the extraordinary palace and fortress complex developed by the Nasrid rulers before Granada fell to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492.

Allow a substantial part of your second day for it. The official Alhambra guidance suggests around three hours for a general visit, although anyone interested in the architecture and history could easily linger longer. Your ticket includes the Nasrid Palaces, Alcazaba, Partal and Generalife, and access to the Nasrid Palaces is at a specific timed slot.

Book this before you book the finer details of the trip. Tickets are limited and the Alhambra itself recommends advance purchase because of high demand.

The rest of the day can be spent wandering Granada rather than racing through another checklist of attractions. Explore the old Albaicín quarter, stop for tapas and find one of the viewpoints looking across towards the Alhambra and the mountains beyond.

One of the pleasures of this trip is precisely that you’re not spending seven nights inside a purpose-built ski resort. You’re in a proper Spanish city, eating and drinking somewhere people live year-round, while knowing that tomorrow you’re heading into those snowy mountains on the horizon.

Day 3: From palace to pistes

After breakfast, leave Granada and drive into the Sierra Nevada.

The ski resort is only around 31km from the city, so there’s no need for a grim predawn transfer. The road climbs dramatically from the plains around Granada towards Pradollano, the purpose-built resort village at around 2,100 metres.

Check into your accommodation, collect any hire equipment and, depending on arrival time and lift-pass options, either get onto the mountain for a few afternoon runs or use the day to settle in and explore Pradollano.

This is where the contrast with Granada becomes quite entertaining.

Less than an hour ago you were surrounded by Islamic architecture and little city bars. Now there are skis over shoulders, gondolas overhead and snow-covered peaks rising towards 3,000 metres.

Welcome to skiing in southern Spain.

Days 4–6: Skiing the Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada is not a novelty hill that happens to have some snow.

The official resort figures currently give 112.5km of skiing across 134 pistes, with 1,200 metres of skiable vertical — the largest vertical drop of any Spanish ski resort.

Pradollano sits at approximately 2,100m, while the lift system climbs towards the 3,000m mark beneath Veleta, whose summit reaches 3,396m.

That altitude matters. Andalucía may sound an unlikely place to look for snow, but much of the skiing is extremely high.

The main mountain is open and largely above the treeline, with broad pistes spreading around Borreguiles and towards the higher slopes beneath Veleta. There is plenty here for intermediates, while beginners have dedicated learning terrain around Borreguiles, reached directly from Pradollano by gondola.

More confident skiers can make use of the resort’s full vertical, steeper terrain and long descents back towards the village.

Four days feels about right. It’s enough time to explore the different sectors, repeat the runs you like and allow some flexibility if weather or wind affects the highest lifts, without needing Sierra Nevada to provide the scale of the enormous French mega-domains.

And then there is the setting.

On a clear day this is skiing with an unmistakably southern character: huge blue skies, the landscape of Andalucía far below and, from the highest parts of the mountain in exceptional visibility, views stretching towards the Mediterranean.

It isn’t an Alpine experience transplanted to Spain. That’s precisely the attraction.

What sort of skier will enjoy it?

Sierra Nevada is particularly appealing for intermediates. There’s a large amount of blue and red terrain and plenty of opportunity for relaxed cruising.

Beginners are well catered for too. The main learning area is at Borreguiles, around 2,645–2,700m, with easy pistes and access from Pradollano by gondola. That also means beginners aren’t condemned to learning on a low patch of marginal snow beside a car park.

Advanced skiers have black terrain and opportunities beyond the straightforward piste network, although anyone planning to explore off-piste should use appropriate safety equipment and local guiding.

The largely open terrain does mean there is relatively little shelter in poor visibility, and the resort’s altitude leaves the upper lifts exposed to weather. That’s worth bearing in mind when planning the trip — and another reason we’d rather have four ski days than arrive expecting one particular day to be perfect.

What about the snow?

This is probably the question everyone asks.

Can a ski resort in Andalucía really be snow-sure?

The answer is more nuanced than simply looking at its latitude.

Sierra Nevada’s great advantage is altitude. The resort village is already at around 2,100m and much of the important skiing sits considerably higher. The resort also has extensive snowmaking infrastructure.

Natural snowfall can vary considerably from season to season, and sunshine is obviously plentiful this far south. Lower slopes can therefore look and feel quite different from the high mountain.

For that reason, we’d lean towards late January through March for this sort of trip rather than gambling on an early December opening. March in particular can be an intriguing proposition: longer days, plenty of sunshine and the possibility of good high-altitude snow.

As ever, no European ski resort can guarantee conditions months in advance. Sierra Nevada’s unusual combination of southerly latitude and serious altitude simply gives it a different set of strengths and weaknesses from the Alps.

Day 7: Ski in the morning, Málaga in the evening

Have a final morning or full day on the mountain, depending on your appetite and travel plans, then descend from the Sierra Nevada and head towards Málaga.

This is where the trip delivers one last change of scene.

You can leave a ski resort in the mountains and, a few hours later, be eating dinner in Málaga with the Mediterranean nearby.

Spend the final night in the city rather than beside the airport. Have dinner, wander through the historic centre and enjoy the slightly surreal experience of having ski boots and salopettes sitting in your hotel room while you’re very obviously back in southern Spain.

Then the following morning it’s a straightforward journey to Málaga Airport for the flight home.

Do you need a car?

For this particular version of the trip, we’d hire one.

It isn’t impossible to construct the journey using public transport, and there are buses between Granada and Sierra Nevada, but the whole appeal of this itinerary is flexibility.

A car makes the Málaga–Granada–Sierra Nevada–Málaga circuit straightforward, allows you to choose accommodation more freely and removes the need to coordinate ski luggage with several separate transfers.

There is one caveat: this is a mountain road in winter. Check weather and road conditions and make sure the hire car is appropriately equipped if snow is forecast. Don’t assume that because you’ve landed on the Costa del Sol you won’t encounter winter driving conditions 2,000 metres higher up.

Where should you stay for the skiing?

For a four-night ski section, we’d stay in Pradollano rather than trying to commute from Granada each morning.

Granada is tantalisingly close, and staying there while skiing is technically possible. But once you’ve factored in the mountain drive, parking and changing into ski gear, the novelty would wear off quickly.

Staying in the resort means you can walk to the lifts in the morning, ski until the end of the day and head straight back to your accommodation.

Who is this trip for?

Probably not someone who wants to click into their skis outside a chalet on Sunday morning and remain inside a vast interconnected ski domain until the following Saturday.

But that’s rather the point.

This trip would suit someone who likes skiing but doesn’t necessarily need every waking hour of a winter holiday to revolve around it. It works particularly well for couples with slightly different levels of enthusiasm for skiing, mixed-interest groups, or anyone who enjoys the mountains but also wants good food, history and somewhere genuinely interesting to explore.

It could also be an excellent introduction to a different style of ski trip for someone who has spent years repeating the familiar Alpine formula.

Four days of skiing is still a proper ski holiday. It simply leaves room for something else.

The Hidden Mountain Ski verdict

We love enormous ski areas. There are times when nothing beats waking up with hundreds of kilometres of pistes in front of you.

But skiing doesn’t always have to be the entire point of the journey.

A week in Andalucía offers something that very few conventional ski destinations can reproduce: the Alhambra one day, skis on your feet the next, four days exploring a high-altitude mountain and a final evening beside the Mediterranean.

Sierra Nevada probably isn’t going to replace the Alps for most British skiers.

It doesn’t need to.

Sometimes the most memorable ski trips are the ones where the skiing is only part of the story.

At first glance, skiing is not an especially promising candidate for an accessible sport. It takes place on steep, snow-covered mountains, relies heavily on balance and mobility, involves cumbersome equipment and depends on an infrastructure of chairlifts, gondolas, buses and mountain restaurants that was largely designed with able-bodied skiers in mind. Yet skiing itself has become remarkably adaptable, and the range of people now able to participate is probably much wider than many skiers realise.

The technology, equipment and expertise now exist to get a very wide range of people onto snow. The more difficult part can be everything surrounding the skiing. Getting from the airport to the resort, reaching the ski school from the accommodation, boarding lifts with a sit-ski, finding an accessible toilet halfway up the mountain or simply being able to have lunch with the rest of the group can present much bigger obstacles. Specialist instructors and equipment may also be available, but not necessarily during the particular week someone wants to travel. Adaptive skiing, in other words, does not automatically make for an accessible ski holiday.

There is more than one way to ski

Adaptive skiing is a broad term because the adaptations required are as varied as the skiers themselves. A mono-ski has a moulded seat mounted above a single ski and is generally intended for skiers who have sufficient upper-body strength and balance to ski independently. Outriggers — essentially shortened forearm crutches with small skis attached — provide additional balance and can help the skier initiate and control turns.

A bi-ski uses two skis beneath the seat, providing greater stability, and depending on the skier it can be controlled independently or assisted by an instructor skiing behind using tethers. Other skiers may use three-track or four-track techniques, prostheses or combinations of conventional skis and outriggers. Visual impairment presents an entirely different set of requirements: a skier might follow a guide wearing a high-visibility bib and use agreed instructions or radio communication. For people with learning disabilities or autism there may be little or no specialist hardware involved at all, with the adaptation instead coming from how the instructor teaches and communicates.

This is important when we start talking about whether a particular resort is “accessible”, because there is no single accessible skier and therefore no universal checklist. A resort that works extremely well for an independent mono-skier may be considerably less practical for somebody who uses a wheelchair away from the slopes. A visually impaired skier may encounter relatively few problems with the physical infrastructure but need an appropriately trained guide, while another skier may require assistance throughout the day. Accessibility is really a chain of requirements, and the links will be slightly different for everyone.

When the mountain works

Some Alpine resorts have gone considerably further than simply adding an adaptive lesson to the ski-school brochure. La Plagne is a particularly interesting example. Its ski area permits sit-skis on chairlifts and some gondolas, with marked priority lanes and lift staff able to slow chairs and assist with boarding. Wheelchair-accessible toilets are provided at several points around the mountain, including at altitude — the sort of detail that sounds mundane until you consider trying to spend an entire ski day without it.

La Plagne also has a long association with adaptive skiing and specialist equipment. What makes it interesting is that accessibility has been considered as part of how someone moves around and uses the ski area, rather than being treated solely as an activity provided by a ski school.

Tignes has similarly deep roots in adaptive snowsports. The resort was involved in the 1992 Albertville Winter Paralympics and will host the Para Alpine World Championships in 2027, with adaptive skiing remaining part of the resort in the decades between. For someone planning an ordinary ski holiday, that history matters mainly because of what it has produced on the ground: familiarity. Lift operators who regularly encounter different equipment know what they are dealing with, ski schools build up specialist experience, and getting an adaptive skier onto and around the mountain becomes part of normal operations rather than an unusual request.

Les 2 Alpes approaches the problem from another useful direction. The Jandri lift has accessible facilities at its stations, giving access from resort level towards the high mountain, while the resort publishes information covering adapted transport, parking, public toilets, lift-pass arrangements and accessible facilities. There is even provision for the journey into resort, with wheelchair users able to use the Transaltitude service from Grenoble when booked in advance. These details are never going to produce photographs as dramatic as a sit-skier throwing up a plume of powder, but they may ultimately make a much greater difference to whether the holiday actually works.

The Avoriaz problem

Avoriaz demonstrates particularly well why the label “accessible resort” needs some interrogation. On the skiing side there is plenty to recommend it: specialist adaptive instruction is available, equipment includes dual-skis and uniskis, and the resort provides ski-sleds that can be used by people with reduced mobility.

The complication is Avoriaz itself. One of the things many skiers love about the resort is its car-free, snow-covered centre. Instead of roads running between accommodation blocks, much of the town effectively becomes part of the snowy landscape, which is atmospheric, attractive and very convenient if you are moving around on skis. For somebody with reduced mobility, however, the same feature can create a considerable additional challenge.

Avoriaz itself acknowledges that its snow-covered streets can severely affect access for people with reduced mobility and provides information and equipment intended to mitigate the problem. That certainly does not mean that someone using a wheelchair cannot holiday there, but it illustrates the distinction rather neatly: a resort can have excellent adaptive skiing while the physical design of the resort makes everything before and after the skiing considerably more complicated. Finding a handiski logo on a resort website therefore tells you far less than you might initially assume.

The parts of the ski holiday we don’t usually think about

For most skiers, getting from a hotel bedroom to a chairlift barely warrants consideration. For someone travelling with a disability, exactly the same journey can involve a surprising number of questions. A hotel may advertise an accessible room, but is there actually enough space around the bed? Is access through reception step-free? Does the lift accommodate the particular wheelchair being used? Can the ski room be reached easily, and is there somewhere suitable to store specialist equipment?

The route outside matters just as much. A 300-metre walk to the lift sounds perfectly reasonable in a hotel description, but 300 metres of packed snow is a very different prospect from 300 metres of dry pavement. Once on the mountain, there are further questions about which lifts accept particular adaptive equipment, whether lift staff can assist with boarding, whether gondola stations have step-free access and which mountain restaurants and toilets are genuinely accessible.

Instruction needs similar scrutiny. A ski school advertising adaptive lessons does not necessarily mean that a suitable instructor — or the right equipment — will be available on any given week, so this is one area where speaking directly to the ski school well before booking is particularly worthwhile. Even the transfer from the airport deserves attention. An accessible airport at one end and an accessible hotel at the other do not solve much if the vehicle connecting the two cannot accommodate the passenger, their wheelchair or their ski equipment.

None of these things is especially dramatic in isolation, which is perhaps why they are so easily overlooked. Put together, though, they can determine whether someone spends a week skiing and eating on the mountain with family and friends, or spends a large part of the holiday negotiating obstacles everyone else barely notices.

Start before the Alps

For British skiers interested in adaptive snowsports, one organisation deserves particular mention. Disability Snowsport UK has been helping disabled people participate in skiing and snowboarding for more than four decades, working with people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities and using specialist instructors and volunteers to help skiers find the techniques and equipment that work for them. In the 2025/26 season alone, DSUK supported 1,861 disabled children and adults and their families, delivering more than 7,000 lessons and activities.

For somebody considering their first adaptive ski holiday, an indoor snow centre or dry slope can be a much more sensible place to start than booking a week in the Alps and trying to work everything out after arrival. Predictable conditions give a new skier the chance to try equipment, work with an instructor and establish what assistance they actually need without weather and snow conditions becoming yet another variable. Indoor centres offer the experience of skiing on real snow before travelling, while dry slopes make regular instruction possible regardless of what the British winter happens to be doing.

Perhaps more importantly, a few sessions at home mean that when it comes to contacting an Alpine ski school, the skier or their family already has a much clearer idea of what they need and what questions to ask. So how accessible is skiing?

Perhaps the surprising answer is that skiing itself can be extraordinarily accessible. Adaptive equipment and specialist instruction have found ways around physical barriers that initially seem fundamental to the sport, and people now ski seated, standing, guided, independently and assisted. The solution for one skier may bear almost no resemblance to that required by another.

The ski holiday surrounding them remains harder to adapt. There are resorts doing impressive work: La Plagne’s attention to lift access and facilities on the mountain, Tignes’ long relationship with adaptive snowsports and Les 2 Alpes’ consideration of transport and resort infrastructure all show what can be achieved. Avoriaz demonstrates the other side of the equation, where serious adaptive ski provision exists alongside a resort layout that can create significant difficulties away from the pistes.

Anyone planning an adaptive ski trip therefore needs to add a second layer of research to the usual questions about snow reliability, piste mileage and hotel location. Speak directly to the ski school about the individual skier rather than relying on a generic accessibility page, and confirm specialist instruction and equipment before booking flights. Ask the accommodation specific questions about access rather than trusting an “accessible” filter to cover every requirement. Look carefully at the route between the hotel and the lifts, and investigate facilities on the mountain as thoroughly as those down in the resort.

Above all, work out what accessibility means for the individual skier. The ski industry has become remarkably good at adapting the physical act of skiing to different bodies and different needs. The resorts that do this best are the ones beginning to understand that a genuinely accessible ski holiday depends on everything around the skiing working too.

You might have a confident skier who wants to cover serious mileage, somebody happiest cruising blues, an improving skier who is perfectly competent until presented with an unexpectedly steep pitch, and another who wants to head off-piste whenever conditions allow. Then there is the person who hates drag lifts, the one for whom a good mountain lunch is an essential part of the day, and someone who is quite happy to stop at three and head for the spa.

Almost every resort claims to have ‘something for everyone’. The more useful question is whether people with very different ideas of a good ski day can actually enjoy the same holiday.

Ability isn’t just about piste colour

Describing somebody as an intermediate doesn’t tell you very much. One intermediate may happily tackle almost any groomed piste on the mountain, while another is comfortable on wide blues and gentle reds but hates narrow tracks, steep sections or icy descents. Both quite reasonably describe themselves as intermediates.

Piste grading only gets you so far. Width, grooming, traffic and terrain can matter as much as gradient, particularly for a skier whose confidence can disappear much faster than their technical ability.

This is one reason Passo Tonale works particularly well for mixed groups. Its broad, open slopes offer plenty of straightforward skiing, while stronger skiers have the Presena glacier and more challenging terrain towards Ponte di Legno and Temù. Alta Badia achieves something similar on a larger scale: there is masses of confidence-building skiing around Corvara, while more ambitious skiers can head onto the Sella Ronda and further into the Dolomiti Superski area.

The important thing is that people can ski differently without effectively going on separate holidays.

Look at how the mountain actually works

Counting blue, red and black lines on a piste map isn’t enough. Look at the lifts as well. A nervous skier may be perfectly capable of skiing the terrain but hate a long drag lift or awkward T-bar. Equally, a lovely network of easy pistes isn’t much use if the only route home involves something they really don’t want to ski.

Trace the likely day around the map from the point of view of the least confident person. Can they get onto the mountain easily? Is there a useful choice of runs served by gondolas and chairlifts? Can they get home comfortably at the end of the day?

Then do the same exercise for the strongest skier. Is there enough terrain to keep them interested without disappearing to the other side of the ski area every morning?

Cervinia is particularly good at solving both problems. There are miles of long, relatively forgiving pistes on the Italian side, while stronger skiers can cross into Zermatt and have a huge amount of more challenging terrain at their disposal. Everyone doesn’t need to make the journey simply because it is there.

The Swiss Valais offers other good examples. Grimentz and Zinal combine manageable groomed skiing with blacks, itineraries and excellent freeride possibilities, allowing a group to spend part of the day together before heading off in different directions.

You don’t have to ski together all day

A group ski holiday doesn’t need to mean skiing in a group from first lift until last. In practice, mixed groups often work much better when they accept that they will separate.

Ski together for a while, split according to ability or enthusiasm, then meet somewhere good for lunch. People can reshuffle afterwards depending on who wants a big afternoon and who fancies an easy cruise home.

This is where the geography of a ski area becomes surprisingly important. Good connections and obvious meeting points can be more useful than another 50 kilometres of pistes. A mountain restaurant at the junction of several lifts is considerably better for a mixed group than an extraordinary one that everybody can only reach by skiing the same difficult red.

The Dolomites are particularly good at this because lunch is already part of the rhythm of the ski day. Splitting up for a couple of hours and reconvening over pasta and a glass of wine feels perfectly natural.

Remember the rest of the holiday

The more varied the group, the more important the resort becomes once the skis come off. Someone may take a morning off, another might finish early, and bad weather may persuade half the party into the spa while the rest head out regardless.

This is where Kitzbühel has an obvious advantage. It is a proper town as well as a major ski resort, so an afternoon away from the slopes isn’t a punishment. Corvara offers a smaller Alpine version of the same thing, while Cervinia has enough restaurants and bars to give people some independence.

Passo Tonale makes the opposite trade-off. It isn’t the prettiest traditional village in the Alps, but much of the accommodation is extremely convenient for the slopes. For a group whose members are likely to start and finish skiing at different times, that can be worth considerably more than a picturesque church square.

The hotel matters too. For a group of couples, a good three- or four-star hotel with a comfortable bar, decent breakfast and perhaps a pool or spa can be a better choice than fairly basic accommodation selected purely because you can ski to the door. Ski-in/ski-out is wonderful, but there are another sixteen hours in the day.

Start with the non-negotiables

Before choosing a resort, ask everybody what they actually need rather than where they want to go. Someone may have no particular preference between Italy, Austria and Switzerland but know that they hate drag lifts. Another may care very little about the hotel but want proper off-piste, while somebody else simply wants straightforward skiing and to be able to walk to the lift every morning.

Those requirements are much more useful than six people suggesting six different resorts.

The aim isn’t to find somewhere that gives every skier absolutely everything they want. It is to remove the things most likely to spoil someone’s holiday while giving everyone enough freedom to ski the way they enjoy.

The best resort for a mixed group isn’t necessarily the one with the biggest ski area, highest lifts or most challenging terrain. It is somewhere people can ski together when they want to, split up when they don’t, meet again easily and still feel at the end of the week that they’ve been on holiday together.

You don’t need to find a mountain where everybody wants to ski exactly the same thing. You need to find one where they don’t have to.

Tomorrowland Winter has confirmed that it will return to Alpe d’Huez from 20–27 March 2027, with pre-registration already open ahead of tickets going on sale. For thousands of people, securing a place will be every bit as important as booking a ski holiday, because the festival has become one of the biggest events on the winter calendar, attracting internationally renowned DJs to one of France’s largest ski areas. Twenty years ago, the idea of combining a major electronic music festival with a week on the slopes would have seemed like an unlikely experiment. Today, it feels entirely at home in the Alps.

That says rather a lot about the way skiing has changed.

Après ski has always been part of a winter holiday, but it has never stood still. The bars still fill as the lifts close, music still drifts across sunny terraces and ski boots remain the only acceptable footwear, yet the experience has broadened so much that two people can spend a week in the same resort and come home with completely different ideas of what après ski actually is. For one, it might mean dancing in front of a festival stage with ten thousand other people. For another, it is a quiet drink outside a mountain restaurant while the last skiers carve their way back towards the village. Neither experience is more authentic than the other. They simply reflect the extraordinary range of experiences that skiing now offers.

It is easy to assume that après ski has become louder, bigger and more commercial, but that is only part of the story. The traditional rituals haven’t disappeared at all. Austria’s umbrella bars are every bit as lively as they were thirty years ago, live bands still persuade entire terraces to sing songs they barely know, and there is something wonderfully democratic about a room full of skiers in helmets, goggles and ski boots forgetting entirely what they do for a living. The appeal has never depended on polished performances or expensive production. It has always been about shared enthusiasm after a good day in the mountains.

France gradually nudged the idea in a different direction. Venues such as La Folie Douce demonstrated that mountain entertainment could become an attraction in its own right, blending DJs, performers, dancers and spectacular alpine settings into an afternoon show that people actively planned their ski day around. Rather than stopping for a drink because they happened to be passing, skiers began timing their final runs so they could arrive before the music reached its peak. Resorts across Europe watched closely, and many adopted elements of the same formula, whether through resident DJs, sponsored events or increasingly ambitious entertainment programmes.

Italy has largely resisted that race for scale. There are certainly lively bars and late afternoons that drift happily into evening, but the emphasis often feels different. Long lunches remain an important part of the skiing culture, good food is rarely treated as an afterthought and conversation seems to last longer than the music. A plate of fresh pasta, a glass of Alto Adige wine and another half hour in the sunshine can be every bit as satisfying as standing shoulder to shoulder beneath a speaker stack.

Switzerland, meanwhile, continues to occupy several worlds at once. St Moritz embraces glamour with characteristic confidence, Verbier has developed an energetic social scene of its own, while countless smaller villages remain wonderfully understated. In many places, après consists of little more than a cosy hotel bar, a wood-burning stove and the sort of atmosphere that encourages people to linger over another drink because nobody is looking at their watch.

Taken together, those experiences make it surprisingly difficult to define what après ski now means. The phrase still conjures the same broad idea, yet the reality varies enormously from one valley to the next.

The arrival of festivals such as Tomorrowland Winter has undoubtedly changed the landscape. Rather than treating entertainment as something that begins once the lifts close, many resorts now build entire weeks around music, with internationally renowned DJs sharing the billing with the skiing itself. Tomorrowland may be the highest-profile example, but it is far from alone. Snowbombing in Mayrhofen, Rise Festival in Les Deux Alpes and an ever-growing calendar of mountain music events have all helped create holidays where the evening programme is every bit as important as the snow conditions.

Social media has accelerated that evolution. Resorts are no longer competing solely on the quality of their lift systems or the extent of their ski area; they are also competing for attention. Fireworks above a packed terrace, a saxophonist performing against a backdrop of snowy peaks or a headline DJ playing to thousands of people naturally makes for compelling video. Those images travel quickly and have become a powerful marketing tool, introducing a new generation of skiers to resorts they may never have considered before.

At the same time, the quieter side of mountain life has lost none of its appeal. In fact, there is an argument that it has become even more precious. A tiny family-run restaurant serving homemade food, an old wooden hut tucked away above the tree line or a sunny terrace where conversation is the loudest sound can feel wonderfully refreshing in an era when so much of the online conversation focuses on spectacle. The Alps have always offered both experiences, and perhaps the greatest strength of modern skiing is that travellers no longer feel obliged to choose one over the other.

That breadth of choice is ultimately what defines après ski today. Some people happily organise an entire holiday around festival line-ups, while others are searching for villages where the loudest sound after four o’clock is the church bell echoing across the valley. Neither approach is more authentic than the other because Alpine resorts have never stood still. Every generation has shaped the mountains in its own way, whether through new lifts, better restaurants, improved accommodation or entirely new forms of entertainment. Festivals are simply the latest chapter in that continuing story, and they sit comfortably alongside traditions that have been bringing skiers together for decades.

Perhaps that is the biggest change of all. Après ski is no longer a single tradition that every skier experiences in roughly the same way. It has become an umbrella term that encompasses everything from world-famous music festivals to sleepy mountain cafés, elegant hotel bars, family-run restaurants and bustling Austrian umbrella bars. The skiing still provides the common thread, but what happens afterwards is increasingly shaped by personal taste rather than local custom.

For some, Tomorrowland Winter represents the ultimate way to celebrate a week in the mountains. Others will happily spend the same week searching for quiet restaurants, hidden terraces and long lunches with uninterrupted views of the Alps. The reassuring thing is that there is room for both, and perhaps that is the strongest sign yet that skiing continues to evolve without losing the qualities that made people fall in love with it in the first place.

What we don’t tend to spend very much time thinking about is how we’ll actually experience the mountain itself.

It’s perhaps one of skiing’s stranger quirks that we’re perfectly happy to invest in almost every other part of a holiday whilst overlooking what we’re travelling hundreds of miles to enjoy in the first place. We’d happily pay for a room with a better view or a more convenient flight home without giving much thought to whether spending the same amount of money might make our time on the mountain considerably more enjoyable.

Mountain guides have become something of a victim of their own image over the years. Spend five minutes watching ski films or scrolling through social media and it’s easy to understand why. They’re invariably photographed waist deep in powder or skiing terrain that many of us would much rather admire from the comfort of a restaurant terrace. Whilst guides can undoubtedly provide all of those experiences, we wonder whether that’s caused many skiers to misunderstand what they’re actually paying for when they book one.

The misconception may stem from the fact that people imagine they’re paying for six hours of somebody’s time when what they’re really paying for is years, and often decades, of experience. You’re paying for somebody to know that yesterday’s plans should change because twenty centimetres of fresh snow has fallen overnight, that the queues will disappear if you’re prepared to stop for coffee for twenty minutes and that the restaurant everyone’s talking about isn’t nearly as good as the one another valley away. More than anything else, you’re paying for local knowledge that’s almost impossible to replicate as a visitor, no matter how diligently you’ve studied the piste map over breakfast.

One of the things that becomes apparent remarkably quickly when skiing with a guide is just how much of a ski holiday is spent making small decisions. Which lift should we take next? Is the snow likely to be better elsewhere? Is this run suitable for everyone in the group? Are we likely to spend the next half an hour queueing if we ski across to the other side of the mountain? None of these decisions are particularly difficult in isolation but they have a habit of consuming time throughout the course of a week. Spending a day with somebody else making them all for you is surprisingly liberating and allows you to spend less time thinking about skiing and considerably more time simply enjoying it.

It’s also remarkable how quickly we fall into habits on a ski holiday. Even in enormous ski areas we tend to discover our favourite runs within a day or two before returning to them again and again throughout the week. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, of course, but it does mean that many visitors only ever scratch the surface of the places they’ve travelled so far to visit. Guides have a habit of changing that. They persuade you to turn right when you’d instinctively have gone left, to linger over lunch because the mountain will be quieter an hour from now and occasionally to abandon your carefully considered plans entirely because there’s something rather better waiting elsewhere.

Some of our favourite memories of ski holidays have very little to do with the skiing itself and it’s perhaps no coincidence that many of them have involved local recommendations we’d never have discovered alone. They’re the unexpected lunch stops, the detours that weren’t part of the original plan and the moments when somebody points towards a distant peak before explaining precisely where you’ll be skiing tomorrow if the weather behaves itself. By the end of the day you’ve invariably learnt something too, whether that’s understanding a little more about the mountain you’re standing on or simply realising that you’ve been approaching a particular resort entirely the wrong way for years.

The Vallée Blanche, Chamonix

There are few more iconic guided experiences in the Alps than skiing the Vallée Blanche. The route changes throughout the season depending on conditions and, whilst it’s often described as a bucket list descent, we’d argue it’s equally memorable for the extraordinary scenery and sense of journey. It’s also perhaps the perfect illustration of why mountain guides are worth their fee. Conditions dictate everything here and local knowledge matters enormously.

Thousands of skiers complete the Sellaronda every winter without giving much thought to what’s waiting just beyond the signposts. Sainte Foy Tarentaise

Sainte Foy has long enjoyed a devoted following amongst off-piste skiers and for very good reason. Whilst we’d always recommend exploring beyond the pistes with an appropriately qualified guide, we’d also argue that few places demonstrate the value of local knowledge quite so beautifully. Conditions can vary enormously over relatively short distances and there’s nobody better placed to introduce visitors to the mountain than the people who know it best.

Mountain guides certainly aren’t inexpensive and we’re not suggesting that every ski holiday requires one. We’d simply suggest that if you’ve never spent a day skiing with one before, there’s every chance you’ve misunderstood what they actually do anad how much you can get out of it. If somebody offered the choice between upgrading a hotel room or spending a day skiing with a good mountain guide, we’d take the guide every single time and suspect we’d return home talking rather more about the mountain than the thread count of the hotel sheets.

One of the pleasures of skiing in the Alps is that lunch needn’t simply be a pause between runs. The best mountain restaurants are destinations in their own right, with skiers happily taking a longer route across the mountain or booking weeks in advance for a table.

These five restaurants are among the Alps’ most memorable lunch destinations. Some are celebrated for their food, others for their setting or history, but all are places worth building a ski day around.

Chez Vrony, Zermatt

Few mountain restaurants have achieved quite the reputation of Chez Vrony. Sitting at 2,130 metres in the hamlet of Findeln above Zermatt, it would be easy to assume that its popularity owes principally to its uninterrupted views of the Matterhorn. Spend an afternoon there, however, and it quickly becomes apparent that there is rather more to its success than its location.

The restaurant has grown from its origins as a mountain farmhouse into one of Switzerland’s most sought-after lunch reservations while retaining a clear connection to both its history and its surroundings. Local produce features prominently throughout the menu and the celebrated Vrony Burger, made using the restaurant’s own beef, remains one of the Alps’ great ski lunches. Sophisticated without feeling formal, it is somewhere that rewards lingering over lunch before heading reluctantly back onto the slopes.

How to get there

Chez Vrony sits within Zermatt’s Sunnegga-Rothorn ski area and is reached by skiing down towards Findeln. Non-skiers can also access the hamlet via the Sunnegga funicular and winter walking paths when conditions allow.

What to order

The Vrony Burger deserves its reputation, although the beef carpaccio and mountain goat’s cheese ravioli are equally worthy alternatives.

Allow approximately CHF50-70 per person for lunch before wine.

Rifugio Emilio Comici, Val Gardena

At first glance, Rifugio Emilio Comici feels rather unlikely. Sitting at 2,154 metres beneath the limestone walls of Sassolungo, it has built its reputation not around hearty mountain cooking but beautifully prepared seafood and Mediterranean flavours.

There is nothing contrived about the combination. Fresh seafood somehow feels entirely at home here, whether enjoyed from the panoramic terrace or within its more traditional Alpine interior. While many mountain restaurants are memorable principally for their setting, Comici would comfortably warrant a visit for its food alone. It offers something a little unexpected in the Dolomites and does so with considerable confidence.

How to get there

Rifugio Emilio Comici lies near Plan de Gralba within the Val Gardena ski area and is easily reached from both the Sellaronda circuit and the surrounding lift network.

What to order

The Calamarata with prawns, datterini tomatoes and basil perfectly captures the restaurant’s Mediterranean character. Seafood lovers should also look out for the oysters and king prawns when available.

Budget

Expect to spend around €40-60 per person for lunch, excluding wine.

Hospiz Alm, St Christoph am Arlberg

Hospiz Alm manages to be both exactly what you would expect of an Austrian mountain restaurant and something rather more surprising besides. Sitting beside piste 64 in St Christoph at 1,800 metres, its timber interiors, generous portions and traditional Alpine cooking feel entirely at home in the Arlberg.

It is only once you discover what lies beneath the restaurant that its reputation begins to make complete sense. Its extraordinary wine cellar houses one of the world’s largest collections of large-format bottles, including rare Bordeaux and vintages that would feel equally at home in some of Europe’s most celebrated fine dining establishments. Despite its credentials, Hospiz Alm remains refreshingly unpretentious. It is perfectly possible to arrive in ski boots for an excellent Wiener schnitzel before skiing back onto the slopes, which is exactly as it should be.

How to get there

Hospiz Alm sits beside piste 64 in St Christoph and can be reached easily on skis from across the Arlberg ski area. Its village location also makes it accessible for non-skiers.

What to order

Wiener schnitzel is difficult to look beyond, although Tyrolean classics and excellent steaks feature prominently throughout the menu.

Budget

Lunch can be relatively modest by Alpine standards, although the wine cellar offers almost limitless opportunities to increase the final bill.

Club Moritzino, Alta Badia

There are few places that capture the Italian approach to mountain dining quite as well as Club Moritzino. Occupying its position at 2,100 metres above Alta Badia for more than sixty years, it has become as much a part of the resort’s skiing culture as the Gran Risa itself.

Club Moritzino is best approached without any great sense of urgency. While there is excellent food to be found here, the atmosphere is equally responsible for its enduring popularity. Lunch regularly stretches into the afternoon as skiers gather on the terrace over seafood, wood-fired pizzas and excellent wines while taking in some of the Dolomites’ finest views. There is a confidence about the place that perhaps only comes with six decades spent doing something exceptionally well.

How to get there

Club Moritzino sits at the top of the Piz La Ila gondola above La Villa in Alta Badia and is easily accessible to both skiers and non-skiers.

What to order

Seafood dishes remain central to Club Moritzino’s identity, although its pizzas and grilled specialities are equally deserving of attention.

Budget

Expect premium pricing, particularly when ordering seafood and wine, although quicker and simpler lunch options are also available.

Chalet de la Marine, Val Thorens

At 2,500 metres, Chalet de la Marine is one of the Alps’ highest and most ambitious mountain restaurants. Sitting beside the Dalles piste above Val Thorens, it demonstrates just how sophisticated Alpine dining has become without ever losing sight of its skiing roots.

Fresh produce arrives daily by snowmobile or snowcat before being transformed into a menu that comfortably accommodates both traditional Alpine favourites and more contemporary dishes featuring scallops, lobster and mature beef. There is an understated confidence to Chalet de la Marine that makes it particularly appealing. It feels first and foremost like a restaurant for skiers rather than a fine dining establishment that happens to occupy an impressive location, making it equally suited to a leisurely lunch or one of its memorable evening dinners reached by snowcat after the lifts have fallen silent.

How to get there

The restaurant sits beside the Dalles piste near the Cascade chairlift in Val Thorens and is most easily reached on skis. Evening dining experiences include transport to and from the restaurant by snowcat.

What to order

The menu changes throughout the season, although mature beef, scallops and traditional Alpine specialities regularly feature. Whatever you choose, leave room for the celebrated dessert buffet.

Worth the Detour

Great mountain restaurants have a habit of becoming highlights of a ski holiday. Whether you’re after a legendary burger in Zermatt, seafood in the Dolomites or a leisurely Austrian lunch paired with something special from the wine cellar, there’s something here to suit every taste.

If one catches your eye, it’s well worth booking ahead. The best tables on the mountain rarely stay empty for long.

The television cameras flatten the terrain, making the steepest sections look manageable and the fastest descents seem almost routine. In person, it’s a very different experience. The speed is astonishing, the atmosphere infectious and, perhaps most surprisingly, you’ll come away with a new appreciation of just how talented World Cup racers really are.

The best part is that you don’t have to choose between watching and skiing. Many of the biggest races take place in world-class resorts, making it perfectly possible to spend the morning on the slopes before joining thousands of spectators for the afternoon’s action.

Crans-Montana – Alpine World Ski Championships

1–14 February 2027

Unlike the World Cup circuit, where racers accumulate points over an entire winter, the Alpine World Championships are all about one chance to get it right. Every event crowns a World Champion, making it one of the biggest prizes in alpine skiing outside the Winter Olympics.

For 2027, the Championships return to Crans-Montana in the Swiss Valais, a resort that combines wide, sunny pistes with spectacular views across some of the highest peaks in the Alps. It’s an excellent resort in its own right, but hosting the Championships will add an extra buzz to the town, with fans from across Europe gathering to watch the sport’s biggest names compete.

One of the advantages of visiting a championship venue is the variety. With racing spread over two weeks, you can easily build a holiday around one or two marquee events while still leaving plenty of time to ski yourself. The surrounding region also makes it straightforward to extend your trip or explore other resorts in the Valais.

Kitzbühel – The Hahnenkamm

There are plenty of famous ski races, but only one Hahnenkamm.

The Streif downhill has earned a fearsome reputation over decades thanks to its extraordinary steepness, huge jumps and relentless technical difficulty. Even seasoned World Cup racers speak about it with a mixture of excitement and respect, and winning here carries a prestige that few other victories can match.

For spectators, the atmosphere is every bit as memorable as the racing itself. Tens of thousands of fans line the course, helicopters circle overhead and the entire town embraces race weekend. Even if you don’t know every racer on the start list, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the occasion.

Kitzbühel is also one of Austria’s great ski resorts, so watching the downhill can be just one part of an excellent holiday rather than the sole reason for visiting.

Wengen – The Lauberhorn

If Kitzbühel is dramatic, Wengen is simply beautiful.

The Lauberhorn downhill is the longest race on the World Cup calendar and unfolds against one of the most spectacular backdrops in alpine skiing. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau dominate the skyline, while competitors race through a course that has become one of the sport’s true classics.

Part of Wengen’s charm is that the village itself is car-free. Visitors arrive by mountain railway, and even the journey becomes part of the experience as trains fill with skiers and race fans heading up the mountain together.

The wider Jungfrau region offers exceptional skiing for all abilities, making Wengen one of the easiest places to combine a memorable race weekend with a full week’s holiday.

Schladming – Ski Racing Under the Lights

Not every great ski race involves downhill speeds.

Schladming’s famous night slalom has become one of the highlights of the World Cup calendar thanks to an atmosphere that’s unlike anything else in skiing. Under floodlights, with music echoing around the finish stadium and more than 40,000 fans creating a wall of noise, the event feels closer to a football match than a traditional ski race.

The racing is wonderfully easy to follow too. Slalom unfolds right in front of the spectators, with racers separated by fractions of a second and every mistake immediately obvious, making it an ideal introduction for anyone who hasn’t watched competitive skiing before.

Spend the day exploring the pistes of the Schladming Four Mountains before joining the crowds in the evening, and you’ll quickly understand why so many people return year after year.

A Holiday You’ll Remember Long After the Snow Has Melted

Most ski holidays are remembered for a favourite run, a perfect powder day or a mountain lunch in the sunshine. Add one of these race weekends into the mix and you’ll come home with another story altogether.

For many of us, winter brings two highlights that sit firmly at the top of the calendar. Fresh snow in the mountains and the Six Nations Championship.

At first glance, they seem destined to compete for the same weekends. Do you book the ski trip and miss the rugby? Or stay at home for the matches and postpone the mountains until later in the season?

Fortunately, Europe makes it surprisingly easy to enjoy both.

Whether you’re hoping to ski all day before settling into a lively sports bar packed with fellow supporters, or fancy building an entire holiday around attending an international in Rome or Paris before heading back to the slopes, a little planning means you really can have the best of both worlds.

Italy: The Perfect Rugby and Ski Combination

If there is one country where skiing and Six Nations rugby fit together almost effortlessly, it’s Italy.

The country’s home matches are played at Rome’s iconic Stadio Olimpico, while some of Europe’s finest ski resorts sit in the north-west of the country, all linked by an excellent motorway and high-speed rail network.

Imagine spending Friday carving down the slopes of Courmayeur beneath the dramatic south face of Mont Blanc. On Saturday morning, you catch a train or drive to Turin before boarding a high-speed service to Rome. A few hours later, you’re walking through the gates of Stadio Olimpico to watch Italy take on one of Europe’s rugby heavyweights.

After a night soaking up the atmosphere in the Eternal City, it’s perfectly feasible to head back north and be skiing again the following afternoon.

It sounds ambitious, but it’s considerably easier than many people realise.

The same itinerary works particularly well for Italy’s home fixtures during the 2027 Six Nations, including:

France: Mountains by Day, International Rugby by Night

France offers a slightly different experience.

Rather than travelling to the rugby from the mountains, many visitors simply enjoy the unique atmosphere that develops across French ski resorts during Six Nations weekends.

British and Irish skiers have been holidaying in the French Alps for generations, and when Scotland, Ireland, England or Wales are playing, you’ll often find bars filling long before kick-off.

The lifts have closed, ski boots have been swapped for something more comfortable, and conversations quickly turn from snow conditions to team selection, refereeing decisions and whether this is finally going to be our year.

Resorts such as Méribel, Val d’Isère, Les Arcs, Tignes and Morzine all have thriving international communities during the winter, making them particularly enjoyable places to watch the championship unfold.

If you’d prefer to experience a match in person, France’s excellent TGV network opens another intriguing possibility.

A longer holiday in the Tarentaise Valley can easily be broken up with a night or two in Paris for one of France’s home fixtures before returning to the mountains. It requires a little more planning than the Italian option, but for committed rugby supporters it creates an unforgettable holiday.

The Best Resorts for Watching the Six Nations

Not every ski resort embraces live sport to the same extent.

Purpose-built villages with quieter evening scenes can sometimes struggle to create much atmosphere, while larger international resorts almost always have several venues showing every fixture.

Some of our favourites include:

Méribel – With its strong British following, you’ll rarely struggle to find a lively venue showing every Six Nations match.

Val d’Isère – A cosmopolitan resort where international sport forms part of the après-ski culture throughout the winter.

Morzine – One of the Alps’ most popular destinations for British visitors, making Six Nations weekends particularly enjoyable.

Les Arcs – Plenty of bars screen major sporting events, and the atmosphere builds as kick-off approaches.

St Anton – Although best known for its legendary après-ski, many venues continue the party by showing international rugby into the evening.

As always, if you’re travelling during one of the bigger fixtures—particularly England v Scotland, Ireland v England or France v Ireland—it’s worth reserving a table in advance. The best venues often fill surprisingly quickly.

Planning Ahead

The Six Nations takes place during one of the Alps’ busiest periods, so booking early is always sensible.

Accommodation for February half-term disappears quickly, particularly in resorts popular with British families, while trains to Rome and Paris are generally cheaper when booked well in advance.

It’s also worth checking whether your accommodation has a smart television if you’d prefer a quieter evening for some fixtures. That said, we’d always recommend finding a local bar whenever possible. Sharing the highs and lows of a Six Nations match with fellow supporters—many of whom you’ve never met before—is all part of the experience.

The Best of Both Worlds

Skiing and rugby have more in common than you might expect.

Both inspire fiercely loyal supporters, both thrive on tradition, and both are at their best when enjoyed with good company after a memorable day outdoors.

So rather than choosing between the mountains and the Six Nations next winter, why not combine them?

You might discover that watching the championship from a lively Alpine bar—or even fitting a trip to Rome or Paris into your ski holiday—becomes a tradition you’ll look forward to every winter.

As Europe swelters through another heatwave, the usual summer instincts begin to feel slightly less appealing. A crowded beach, a baking city pavement, an overheated hotel room and another afternoon spent searching for shade are not always the escape they promised to be. Sometimes the real luxury is simpler than that: cool air, a clear head and the need to pull on a fleece.

For anyone in Britain, the Scottish Highlands offer the most accessible version of this. They do not have glaciers in the Alpine sense, but they do have high corries, lingering snow patches and that unmistakable shift in atmosphere that comes with altitude and northern exposure. Garbh Choire Mòr on Braeriach is famous among snow-watchers as one of Britain’s most persistent snow beds, although it is remote, serious mountain terrain rather than a casual summer stroll. Even lower down, the Cairngorm plateau, Glencoe and the Nevis range can offer a welcome reminder that summer does not feel the same everywhere.

For a more dramatic version, the Alps still do what they have always done best. Cable cars lift you from hot valleys into a different climate entirely, where rock, snow and ice replace the heavy air below. At the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise above Zermatt, the high station sits close to 4,000 metres, with glacier views, an ice palace and access to summer skiing when conditions allow. In Austria, Hintertux remains one of Europe’s most reliable year-round glacier areas, while Passo Stelvio in Italy has opened again for its summer season, continuing a tradition that has made it one of the classic warm-weather ski destinations.

Further north, Scandinavia offers another kind of heat escape. Norway’s summer ski areas, including Galdhøpiggen and Fonna in good seasons, have long attracted skiers looking for soft summer snow, big views and long northern days. These are not polished winter resorts in the usual sense, but that is part of their appeal. They are places where the season feels slightly out of step with the rest of Europe.

There is, of course, a more serious thread running through all of this. The same heat that makes these cooler places so appealing is also part of the reason they feel increasingly fragile. Alpine glaciers have retreated sharply over recent decades, Scottish snow patches have disappeared more frequently in recent years, and summer skiing is becoming more dependent on the exact conditions of each season.

That does not mean these places should be treated as relics. They are still very much alive: cold, bright, beautiful and sometimes surprisingly accessible. But perhaps they are worth visiting with a little more attention than before. In a summer when so much of Europe feels too hot to think, there is something deeply restorative about standing in mountain air and remembering that coolness itself can be a form of luxury.

There was a time when the purpose of Scotland’s ski centres seemed fairly obvious, people came to ski - the clue was largely in the name.

A good winter brought full car parks, queues at lifts and the sort of optimism unique to Scottish skiing. A bad winter brought frustration, endless weather-watching and promises that next year would surely be better. Either way, the business model remained broadly the same. Snow was the product.

Today, that certainty feels rather less obvious.

A proposed mountain coaster at Cairngorm has become the latest flashpoint in a long-running debate about what belongs on Scotland’s mountains. Supporters see a sensible attraction capable of bringing visitors and income during quieter months. Critics see something altogether different, arguing that our highest mountain environments risk becoming increasingly commercialised.

Yet the debate itself reveals something interesting. Nobody is really arguing about a coaster. They are arguing about what a Scottish ski centre is supposed to be.

The awkward truth is that skiing alone has rarely paid all the bills in Scotland.

Unlike many Alpine destinations, Scottish ski areas operate in a climate that can be generous one winter and deeply frustrating the next. Snowfall remains possible from autumn through spring, yet reliable conditions are never guaranteed. Operators still need to maintain infrastructure, employ staff and invest in equipment regardless of what the weather decides to do.

That creates a challenge unfamiliar to many skiers. How do you sustain a business built around an activity that may only operate for part of the year?

The answer, increasingly, has been to stop thinking of these places as ski centres.

Nevis Range perhaps provides the clearest example. To many skiers it remains synonymous with Scotland’s highest lift-served terrain. Mention it to mountain bikers, however, and an entirely different picture emerges. The gondola, the trails and the summer visitor economy are now just as much a part of the story as the snow sports.

Glenshee has followed a different path. It remains proudly focused on winter, yet anyone visiting outside the ski season will find walkers, cyclists, motorcyclists and sightseers enjoying the same mountain roads and facilities.

Even the Lecht, perhaps Scotland’s most pragmatic ski area, has long understood the value of attracting visitors for reasons beyond snow.

None of these businesses appear to be abandoning skiing - if anything, they are trying to protect it.

This is where the conversation becomes more complicated than the usual arguments about development.

Most skiers instinctively dislike the idea of mountains becoming attractions. We prefer to imagine them as places that exist outside commercial pressures. Yet lifts, cafés, roads, snow fences and maintenance teams all cost money. Every improvement people ask for requires investment. Every ageing lift eventually reaches a point where replacement becomes unavoidable.

The irony is that many of the non-ski activities traditionalists dislike may be helping fund the skiing they want to preserve.

That does not mean every proposal deserves support. Reasonable people can disagree about where the line should be drawn. A mountain coaster may feel entirely appropriate to one visitor and entirely inappropriate to another.

The more interesting question is whether Scottish skiing can realistically afford to reject any alternative source of income.

Perhaps the debate at Cairngorm matters because it forces us to confront something we would rather avoid.

Scotland’s ski centres are no longer simply ski centres.

They are visitor attractions, transport systems, cafés, viewpoints, bike centres and mountain businesses that happen to offer skiing when conditions allow. Some have already embraced that reality. Others are still negotiating where the balance should lie.

The future of Scottish skiing may ultimately depend on getting that balance right.

Walk into almost any ski rental shop on a Saturday morning and the conversation tends to follow a familiar pattern.

How good a skier are you? What sort of terrain do you like? Have you rented before?

Within a few minutes, many skiers find themselves walking out with the longest, stiffest and most expensive ski that the technician believes they can handle. After all, nobody wants to be told that they should be skiing something shorter, softer or less demanding than the person standing next to them in the queue.

The reality is that most holiday skiers spend their time cruising groomed pistes, exploring different parts of the mountain, stopping for coffee, enjoying lunch and skiing with friends or family whose abilities may vary considerably. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it describes the overwhelming majority of ski holidays across Europe.

The irony is that the skis most people imagine they should want are often not the skis that will help them enjoy the week most.

Better Doesn’t Always Mean Bigger

Most of us are not spending six days trying to qualify for the World Cup.

We are skiing from first lift until last, meeting friends for coffee, exploring corners of the resort we’ve never seen before and lingering over long lunches with mountain views that make us forget about work for a while.

A ski holiday is not a series of isolated runs. It is a full day out in the mountains.

The ski that feels extraordinary during one high-speed descent at 9.15am may not be the ski that still feels enjoyable at 3.30pm after twenty runs, changing snow conditions and a leisurely lunch in the sunshine.

That is where many skiers make a mistake. They choose equipment for their most ambitious moment rather than the hundreds of smaller moments that make up an enjoyable week.

The Length Obsession

Few topics create more confusion than ski length.

Many skiers instinctively believe that longer skis are superior. They look more serious, feel more substantial and are often associated with stronger skiers.

What tends to get overlooked is how much easier modern skis have become to use.

Advances in sidecut design, rocker profiles and construction mean that a ski does not need to be especially long to provide stability. For a great many recreational skiers, dropping down a size can make the entire holiday more enjoyable.

Shorter skis generally require less effort to turn, feel more manageable in busy areas and inspire confidence when conditions are less than perfect. They are often easier in bumps, easier in spring snow and considerably less tiring after several consecutive days on the mountain.

There are, of course, limits. Nobody is suggesting that a six-foot skier should be skiing on beginner rental skis designed for somebody much smaller. The point is simply that many skiers automatically choose length based on status rather than suitability.

A surprising number would find that a slightly shorter ski makes the week feel easier, less tiring and ultimately more enjoyable.

Most Ski Holidays Are Remarkably Similar

The ski industry loves specialisation.

There are carving skis, all-mountain skis, piste skis, freeride skis, powder skis, touring skis and every imaginable variation in between. Reading equipment reviews can sometimes leave the impression that every condition requires an entirely different tool.

Most ski holidays are far less complicated.

A typical day might begin on freshly groomed pistes, move onto shaded north-facing slopes, continue through softer snow after lunch and finish on busy home runs as everyone heads back towards the village.

The best holiday ski is not necessarily the one that excels in a narrow set of conditions. It is the one that makes that entire day feel easy and enjoyable.

That is why so many experienced recreational skiers eventually gravitate towards versatile all-mountain skis. They may give away a little ultimate performance, but they gain something far more valuable: flow.

If your holiday consists of exploring a resort such as Val Cenis, Alpbach, Passo Tonale or Madonna di Campiglio, a versatile and forgiving ski will often deliver more enjoyment than something highly specialised.

The ability to handle changing conditions comfortably is usually more valuable than extracting the final few percent of performance in ideal conditions.

The Question Nobody Asks

When collecting rental equipment, many skiers describe themselves using broad ability labels such as beginner, intermediate or advanced.

The problem is that those labels tell the technician surprisingly little.

Two advanced skiers can have completely different preferences. One might enjoy fast carving on empty morning pistes. Another might spend the day skiing gently with family members and stopping regularly for photographs.

A more useful conversation focuses on how you actually ski.

Do you enjoy short turns or long turns?

Do you like speed or prefer cruising?

Do you venture off-piste or stay mainly on marked runs?

Are you looking for maximum performance or maximum comfort?

Those answers often lead to very different recommendations.

The best rental technicians understand that matching equipment to skiing style is far more important than matching it to somebody’s self-assessment.

The Hidden Mountain View

The best ski holiday memories are rarely attached to a particular ski model.

They come from discovering a favourite run, finding a mountain restaurant you wish you’d known about years ago, skiing with friends, enjoying perfect snow and arriving back in the village with enough energy left for a drink before dinner.

When renting skis, choose equipment that helps you enjoy the whole day rather than impressing somebody in the lift queue.

The right ski is often the one that disappears beneath you. The one that lets you stop thinking about equipment and simply enjoy being in the mountains.

After all, nobody comes home talking about how stiff their skis were.

They come home talking about what a brilliant week they had.

For many British skiers, Norway is not the obvious choice for a ski holiday. The Alps dominate the conversation almost entirely, particularly when people are looking for huge linked areas, high altitude and long lists of famous resorts. Norway tends to sit slightly outside that world. The mountains are generally lower, the resorts smaller and the atmosphere far less geared around tourism in the way people are used to in France, Austria or Switzerland.

Yet for the people who do ski there regularly, that difference is often precisely the point.

One of the first things you notice in Norway is how closely skiing still feels connected to everyday life. In much of the Alps, resorts can feel slightly separate from the places around them — entire villages existing primarily to support visitors through the winter season. In Norway, skiing often feels more integrated into ordinary routines and infrastructure.

That becomes apparent almost immediately if you travel through Bergen towards Voss. The journey itself is part of the appeal. Rather than hiring a car or sitting on a long transfer coach, it is perfectly possible to take the train directly from Bergen into the mountains. The railway arrives right in the centre of Voss, beside the gondola station, with locals, schoolchildren and visiting skiers all using the same transport systems in parallel. For British visitors especially, it feels refreshingly straightforward.

The ease of public transport is one of the more underrated aspects of skiing in Norway generally. Trains, buses and local connections continue operating through winter conditions that would cause chaos elsewhere, partly because the entire country is simply designed around the assumption that snow will arrive and daily life must continue normally when it does.

That attitude influences the skiing culture too.

There is generally less sense of performance around skiing in Norway. The atmosphere on the slopes tends to feel calmer and more practical, with far less emphasis on glamour or status. Families carry packed lunches and flasks without embarrassment, children are given a remarkable amount of independence from a young age and poor weather is treated as something to adapt to rather than complain about.

In larger Alpine resorts, particularly during expensive peak weeks, there can sometimes be a slightly frantic atmosphere — people trying to maximise every lift, every valley and every lunch stop because they feel under pressure to justify the cost and scale of the trip. Norwegian resorts feel less driven by that mentality. Skiing is important there, certainly, but it is approached more as a normal part of winter life than as a luxury experience requiring constant optimisation.

That is one of the reasons Voss works so well.

Voss is a proper town first and a ski destination second, and the resort benefits enormously from that. The mountain rises directly above the settlement rather than existing as an isolated tourist enclave higher up the valley. Cafés, shops and transport all continue functioning for locals as well as visitors, which gives the place a far more grounded atmosphere than many purpose-built resorts.

The skiing itself suits western Norway’s weather patterns extremely well. Reliable snowfall, strong tree skiing and good floodlit facilities make it particularly effective during periods of low visibility or heavy snow, conditions which are common in the region through much of the winter. and spring. Norwegian skiers are generally very comfortable operating in weather that would significantly disrupt the mood of many Alpine holidays, and visitors often find themselves adapting surprisingly quickly to the same mentality.

That becomes even more noticeable in Myrkdalen.

Connected easily from Voss by ski bus, Myrkdalen feels quieter and more self-contained again, with an emphasis on snow quality and terrain rather than village atmosphere or nightlife. The resort has developed a strong reputation for snowfall over recent years, particularly by European standards, and on storm cycles the skiing through the tree-lined sections can be exceptional.

What stands out most, though, is probably the atmosphere around winter itself. Norwegian resorts generally feel designed to function with winter conditions rather than attempting to insulate visitors from them. Drying rooms are standard. Public transport continues operating efficiently in snow. Cross-country trails are floodlit for evening use because large numbers of people genuinely ski after work or school.

Even the social side of skiing feels slightly different. Après exists, but it is usually less central to the experience than in Austria or parts of France. The emphasis tends to fall more towards cabins, cafés and quieter evenings rather than large-scale nightlife. That probably reflects broader Norwegian culture as much as anything specifically ski-related.

Cross-country skiing also remains deeply embedded within Norwegian life in a way that can surprise visitors from elsewhere in Europe. In many countries Nordic skiing has become fairly niche, whereas in Norway it still feels entirely mainstream. Trails are everywhere, children learn young and entire families regularly ski together in the evenings or at weekends. Alpine skiing exists within that broader winter culture rather than dominating it entirely.

None of this means Norway replaces the Alps. If you want endless linked terrain, huge vertical descents or the sheer scale of somewhere like the Three Valleys or Arlberg, the Alps remain unmatched. But Norway offers a different sort of ski experience, one that feels calmer, more integrated into daily life and often far easier logistically than many people expect.

And increasingly, that difference is exactly what appeals to people.

For decades, much of the British conversation around the Alps has revolved around snow. Ski lifts. Powder forecasts. February half terms and Easter conditions. And increasingly, the activities available in summer are not just an afterthought quietly bolted onto ski infrastructure. Many Alpine resorts now actively market themselves as major warm-weather adventure destinations in their own right.

Here are three areas that show just how varied an Alpine summer holiday can be.

Morzine and the Portes du Soleil: mountain biking, lakes and long lunches

If one resort has successfully reinvented itself as a genuine summer destination, it is probably Morzine.

The Portes du Soleil already possessed the infrastructure: lifts, mountain restaurants and vast linked terrain. Summer simply transformed how people use it. Today, the area has become one of Europe’s best-known mountain biking destinations, with everything from gentle family trails to technical downhill tracks accessed directly from the lifts.

Even if you never touch a bike, the variety here is enormous.

You can spend one day hiking high ridgelines above Avoriaz, another paddleboarding or swimming on nearby Lac de Montriond and another taking scenic chairlifts simply to wander between mountain restaurants serving tartiflette, local cheeses and cold beer in the sunshine.

The villages themselves help enormously. Morzine still feels like a proper Alpine town rather than a purpose-built resort, with traditional chalet architecture, weekly markets and enough cafés and restaurants that evenings retain some atmosphere even outside ski season.

It is also one of the easiest Alpine summer destinations from the UK. Geneva airport sits barely over an hour away, meaning you can leave a grey British morning behind and be eating lunch beneath the mountains surprisingly quickly.

Zell am See and Kaprun: lakes, glaciers and Austrian summer culture

Some Alpine resorts work beautifully in summer because they combine mountain scenery with water, and few places do that better than Zell am See.

The lake itself changes the entire atmosphere. On hot afternoons, people swim, paddleboard and sail beneath mountains that still hold snow high above the glacier. Waterfront cafés fill up late into the evening and the whole area feels more relaxed and softer than many pure ski resorts.

What makes Zell am See particularly interesting is the contrast between lake level and glacier level. Within a relatively short distance, you can move from warm lakeside promenades to the high-altitude landscapes around Kaprun and the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.

That creates an unusually broad mix of activities. Hiking and climbing routes spread across the surrounding mountains, paragliders drift silently above the lake and cyclists tackle some of Austria’s most beautiful alpine roads and valleys.

Austria also arguably does summer mountain culture exceptionally well. Mountain huts tend to feel genuinely welcoming rather than transactional, food is often excellent and there is a relaxed confidence to Austrian summer resorts that comes from communities which actually live there year-round.

Lunch might involve smoked trout from the lake, cured meats, sharp mountain cheeses or enormous bowls of goulash eaten outside beneath parasols while thunderstorms build over distant peaks.

Then, an hour later, the skies clear again and the mountains return.

The Dolomites: dramatic hiking, climbing and extraordinary food

The Dolomites feel different from the rest of the Alps almost immediately.

The mountains themselves are sharper and more theatrical, rising vertically above forests and meadows in huge limestone towers that glow pink and orange during evening light. Even people with little interest in hiking often find themselves drawn onto the trails simply because the scenery feels so extraordinary.

For walkers, the possibilities are almost endless. Gentle meadow paths link tiny villages and rifugios serving pasta, local wine and apple strudel, while more ambitious hikers can tackle high-altitude routes and via ferrata systems originally built through the cliffs during the First World War.

Climbing culture here runs deep. So does food culture.

One of the pleasures of a Dolomite summer holiday is how often serious mountain scenery collides with unexpectedly sophisticated food and wine. South Tyrolean influences blend Austrian and Italian traditions together: speck, fresh pasta, mountain cheeses, game dishes and crisp white wines all appearing within the same meal.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Alpine holidays is that they are automatically expensive. During peak ski weeks, some resorts certainly can be. In Morzine and the Portes du Soleil, large catered chalets and apartment-style accommodation work brilliantly for families or groups wanting flexibility around biking and hiking. Many properties sit within walking distance of lifts, swimming complexes and restaurants, meaning you can largely leave the car behind once you arrive.

The Dolomites perhaps offer the widest range of all. Perhaps the real appeal of the Alps in summer is not any single activity.

It is the overall feeling of being there.

The era of endlessly expanding ski domains is largely over. Across the Alps, the biggest investments are increasingly focused somewhere else entirely: faster uplift, glacier access and protecting snow reliability in an increasingly unpredictable climate.

Most summers, Alpine lift projects fall into one of two categories: ageing chairlifts quietly replaced like-for-like, or minor resort upgrades that matter more to seasonnaires than visitors. This summer feels different. Across France, Austria and Italy, several genuinely significant infrastructure projects are either opening fully, entering major new phases or reshaping how skiers move around the mountain ahead of winter 2026/27.

Some are about capacity. Others are about resilience, particularly at resorts where glacier access and snow preservation are becoming increasingly important. In a few cases, the projects fundamentally alter the rhythm of a ski day itself.

Here are four of the most interesting developments currently underway across the Alps.

Les Deux Alpes: the new Jandri era begins

For years, the old Jandri lift system was one of the strangest contradictions in the French Alps. Les Deux Alpes offered one of France’s largest skiable verticals and one of its most snow-sure glacier sectors, yet access to the upper mountain relied on an ageing lift system that regularly created queues and bottlenecks during busy periods.

That changes fully with the arrival of the new Jandri 3S gondola system.

After years of construction work, winter 2026/27 will effectively become the first season where the new uplift defines the experience of skiing Les Deux Alpes. The replacement system dramatically improves access from resort level to the glacier, reducing uplift times while increasing wind resistance and overall carrying capacity.

The scale of the investment is enormous. Stations have been rebuilt entirely, mountain flow has been redesigned and the relationship between the town and the glacier sector now feels fundamentally different.

For Les Deux Alpes itself, the implications go well beyond convenience. Glacier skiing has become increasingly central to the resort’s identity, particularly during difficult early-season snow years. Fast, reliable access to high altitude terrain matters commercially as much as operationally.

It also reinforces Les Deux Alpes’ position as one of the few major French resorts where genuinely high-altitude skiing remains accessible directly from town level without long traverses or multiple lift changes.

Alpe d’Huez: protecting the high mountain experience

Alpe d’Huez has spent years steadily investing in uplift and snow reliability across the wider Grand Domaine, but the long-term focus increasingly centres on preserving the quality of its upper mountain skiing rather than endlessly expanding terrain.

Work linked to the glacier and Pic Blanc sectors continues to shape the resort’s future direction, alongside continued snowmaking improvements designed to maintain coverage during increasingly marginal periods at lower altitude.

Across the wider Skicircus area, work continues upgrading connections and refining uplift infrastructure to improve circulation around an already enormous linked domain. The emphasis is not necessarily on creating new terrain, but on reducing friction: quicker inter-valley movement, smoother transitions between sectors and fewer bottlenecks at key points around the circuit.

That matters in a resort of this scale. Saalbach works best when skiers can move fluidly around the mountain without repeatedly dropping into congested valley stations or relying on slow connector lifts.

Austria’s advantage has always been operational efficiency as much as dramatic terrain. Resorts such as Saalbach increasingly feel engineered around the practical reality of how people actually ski during a week-long holiday: long cruising mileage, constant movement and minimal interruption.

Passo Tonale and Presena Glacier: investing in snow security

Glacier investment now sits at the centre of long-term planning for many European resorts, and nowhere is that more obvious than around the Presena Glacier above Passo Tonale.

The glacier sector continues to see substantial work focused on snow preservation and long-term viability, including projects designed to reduce melt and protect ski operations deeper into spring and earlier into winter. The area has already become known for its use of geotextile snow-covering systems during summer months, but infrastructure investment continues alongside those preservation efforts.

For Passo Tonale itself, the glacier plays an increasingly important role within the wider Skirama Dolomiti network. During poor snow periods lower down, the Presena sector can become the difference between limited skiing and genuinely worthwhile conditions.

What makes Tonale particularly interesting is that it remains relatively affordable and understated despite the strategic importance of the glacier above it. While some glacier resorts increasingly lean luxury, Tonale still feels practical, accessible and deeply focused on skiing itself.

It also reinforces something becoming increasingly obvious across the Alps: the resorts investing most heavily in glacier and snow-security infrastructure are often the ones planning furthest ahead.

The direction of travel is becoming clear

Across the Alps, the biggest infrastructure projects are increasingly concentrated in three areas: faster uplift, glacier access and snow reliability.

There are fewer genuinely new ski domains than there were twenty or thirty years ago - instead, resorts are investing in protecting existing terrain, improving mountain flow and making access more resilient during increasingly unpredictable winters.

For skiers, that probably matters more anyway.

A week in the mountains is shaped less by whether a resort has added another five kilometres of piste, and more by whether the lifts work efficiently, key sectors stay open during marginal weather and the mountain remains enjoyable to move around from first lift to last run.

The resorts investing intelligently in those fundamentals are likely to be the ones people keep returning to long after the marketing images for the latest gondola have faded.

Northern Italy offers something different.

This is not really a “ski week” in the traditional sense at all. It is half city break, half mountain escape. A few nights in Milan eating properly and wandering beautiful streets, before boarding a train north into the Alps for several days of surprisingly enjoyable skiing above the Roman town of Aosta.

Most importantly, it all joins together beautifully.

Fly into Milan Malpensa Airport rather than Bergamo. The Malpensa Express runs directly into the city, meaning you can move from airport to aperitivo with remarkably little stress. From there, Milano Centrale opens up straightforward rail access towards the Aosta Valley without ever needing to hire a car.

For British skiers used to airports, motorway transfers and ski package conveyor belts, the whole thing feels strangely calm.

Milan Before the Mountains

Milan is not as instantly theatrical as Rome or Venice. It takes a little longer to reveal itself. The beauty here is subtler and more grown-up. It is hidden in elegant apartment buildings, impossibly well-dressed old men drinking espresso at the bar, and long late dinners that somehow begin at 9pm and finish well after midnight.

It is also one of the easiest major European cities to actually use. The centre is compact, public transport works properly and the rhythm of the city lends itself perfectly to a shorter stay.

Spend your first afternoon wandering between the Duomo di Milano and the surrounding streets before drifting towards Brera as the evening arrives. The rooftop terraces of the Duomo remain one of Europe’s great urban viewpoints, particularly late in the day when the light softens across the city.

The following morning, Milan rewards slower exploration. The Pinacoteca di Brera feels considerably more intimate than many of Europe’s blockbuster galleries and suits the city itself: elegant rather than overwhelming. Later, the canals around Navigli come alive as aperitivo hour begins and the city seems to collectively exhale.

Leaving Milan behind, the landscape gradually softens into smaller towns, vineyards and eventually proper Alpine scenery as the train enters the Aosta Valley. Unlike many ski transfers, this part of the journey feels like travel rather than logistics.

The town of Aosta itself is an unexpectedly clever ski base. Roman ruins sit beneath dramatic mountains and the atmosphere remains properly Italian rather than feeling purpose-built for tourists. Most importantly, the gondola for Pila rises directly from town.

This is the genius of the trip.

Rather than staying in an expensive, traffic-heavy ski resort, you can base yourself in a real town with genuinely good restaurants and simply lift directly into the mountains each morning.

Skiing Above Aosta

Pila lacks the glamour and marketing profile of better-known Italian resorts, which is precisely why it works so well.

The skiing is much larger and more varied than many people expect. Strong intermediates can comfortably fill several days here, particularly when conditions are good. There is excellent cruising terrain, enjoyable tree skiing and spectacular views stretching across the Aosta Valley towards Monte Bianco.

Most surprising of all is how relaxed the entire experience feels. Lift queues are modest, lunch remains civilised and the slopes retain a noticeably more local atmosphere than the mega resorts further west.

This is not destination skiing in the “once-in-a-lifetime mega trip” sense. Instead, it delivers something arguably more valuable: an easy, enjoyable, low-stress ski experience that combines beautifully with one of Europe’s most stylish cities.

There is something deeply satisfying about drinking espresso in Milan one morning and skiing quiet Alpine slopes the next. More ski holidays should feel like this.

There is a tendency, when planning a trip to Madonna di Campiglio, to treat it as a self-contained destination. It presents itself that way: polished, well-connected, and visually complete, with that particular combination of tree-lined pistes and careful grooming that makes the skiing feel immediately comfortable. You arrive, you settle in, and for many people that is more than enough for a week.

What sits around it tends to be treated as peripheral, if it is considered at all.

The reality is that the surrounding area — loosely grouped under the Skirama Dolomiti lift pass — changes the nature of the trip quite significantly, but only if you approach it with a slightly different mindset. This is not a single, expansive ski area in the way that the larger French domains present themselves. You are not moving seamlessly across valleys on skis, nor are you trying to “cover” it in any meaningful sense. What the pass offers instead is a set of distinct places, each with its own character, that can be combined over the course of a week in a way that feels more deliberate.

That distinction matters, because it shifts the focus away from size and towards choice.

The shape of the area

From Madonna, the immediate network — through Folgarida, Marilleva and Pinzolo — already provides a substantial amount of skiing. That isn’t necessarily a flaw — in fact, it’s part of why Madonna works so well as a base — but it does mean that some parts are easily overlooked. Pinzolo, in particular, is worth making the effort for. It sits slightly apart, feels a little less polished, and adds a different tone to the week that you don’t quite get elsewhere.

Spend a few days within the main Madonna-facing slopes and you begin to understand its rhythm. You also begin to notice where it tightens — where the busier pistes collect people, where the lift lines form, where the experience becomes a little more predictable than you might like.

That is usually the point at which the wider pass becomes useful.

Stepping out: Passo Tonale

The move to Passo Tonale is not just a change of location, but a change in feel. The tree cover falls away, the horizon opens, and the skiing stretches out into something broader and more exposed. There is a sense of space here that contrasts quite sharply with Madonna’s contained slopes, particularly once you begin to work your way up towards the Presena Glacier.

The altitude plays its part, but it is the scale of the terrain that tends to stand out. Runs feel longer, transitions less abrupt, and the overall experience a little less managed. On the right day, it offers exactly the kind of reset that a busier resort cannot.

It is also, in practical terms, straightforward to reach. The road links are simple, although worth keeping an eye on in poor weather, and the journey itself is short enough that it feels like a natural extension of the week rather than a separate excursion.

Further again: Pejo

If Passo Tonale opens things out, Pejo takes a different approach entirely.

Set slightly apart from the main flow of visitors, it is quieter, slower, and more traditional in feel. The skiing here is not trying to impress in the same way; instead, it settles into a steady rhythm that is often missing elsewhere. On a busy weekend, when Madonna is at its most active, Pejo can feel almost detached from it all.

That sense of separation is part of its appeal. It is the place you go when you want the day to feel less structured, less dictated by queues or movement, and more about the skiing itself. It does not need to occupy a large portion of the trip to justify the journey — a single day is often enough to shift the balance.

Where to stay in Madonna

Where you stay in Madonna makes a noticeable difference to how the trip feels.

The centre of the resort has a particular atmosphere — not in an overblown way, but in the sense that it is clearly where things are happening. It’s a place to see and be seen, with a steady flow of people moving between lifts, cafés and bars, and it carries a level of polish that matches the skiing. Staying here keeps everything close and gives the week a certain ease that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Move even a short distance out along the road and the change is quite marked. Prices drop, space increases, and things become quieter, but some of that energy goes with it. For some that trade-off will make sense, but it is worth being clear about what you are giving up.

There is a middle ground — smaller hotels just off the main centre that retain walkability while feeling a little removed — but if the aim is to experience Madonna at its best, the centre is where it comes together most clearly.

What the Skirama Dolomiti area offers, ultimately, is not a single standout feature but a way of structuring a week that feels more varied than it first appears.

It is easy to arrive in Madonna and remain there, and for many people that will be entirely satisfying. The lift pass, however, makes it possible to adjust the tone of the trip as you go — to move from contained, tree-lined skiing to open, high-altitude terrain, and then again to something quieter and more removed.

That flexibility is where the value lies.

It is less about seeing everything, and more about choosing when not to stay in the obvious place.

There’s a reason Sauze works so well at this stage.

It sits within a genuinely large ski area, but the day rarely feels fragmented. The skiing flows through a series of natural routes rather than scattering you across the map, which makes it easier for people to drift apart and come back together again without needing to plan it.

For teenagers, that balance matters. There’s space to explore, enough variation to keep things interesting, and a sense that the mountain holds together.

The village adds the second part of it. There’s life here. Bars fill in the late afternoon, terraces stay busy, and there’s enough going on in the evenings to give the week a sense of momentum.

It’s social without being overwhelming, which is exactly where you want it.

You don’t finish having skied everything.

But you finish having had the kind of week everyone would choose again.

There’s a reason Val Cenis keeps coming up when you start thinking about improving your skiing.

It isn’t just the terrain itself, although that helps. It’s how the resort moves. The skiing links villages, crosses the mountain, and encourages you to think about where you’re going rather than simply getting down.

For a progressing skier, that matters. You start to manage speed across longer sections, hold your line on traverses, and link turns in a more deliberate way. It builds awareness without forcing it.

The reds here are particularly useful. They feel like a continuation of the blues rather than a step up into something separate, which makes them somewhere you can return to repeatedly rather than just tick off once.

It’s not a resort that overwhelms you with choice. It gives you just enough terrain, and then lets you work with it.

The progression feels natural. You can spend time on the steady blues around Campo Smith, then move towards longer, more sustained reds off Jafferau when you’re ready. The gradients remain consistent, without the kind of sudden steep pitches that tend to interrupt developing skiers.

It’s also a place where repetition comes easily. The lift layout brings you back to familiar ground, and the pistes are long enough to let you hold a rhythm rather than resetting every few hundred metres.

Warth–Schröcken — the Arlberg without the noise

Warth sits within the Arlberg, but it offers a very different experience to the better-known names.

If you think of the region in simple terms: St Anton brings the most demanding skiing and the liveliest après-ski; Lech and Zürs lean towards gentler slopes and a more polished, expensive feel. Warth sits slightly apart from both.

The skiing is strong, the snowfall is often among the best in Austria, and the terrain is open and well-spaced. What you don’t get is the same level of crowding or the sense of being pulled into something bigger than you need.

For progression, that balance works. Blues and reds link naturally, gradients build steadily, and there’s enough space to focus on how you’re skiing rather than where you’re trying to get to.

Serre Chevalier — long, even pistes that let you find a rhythm

Serre Chevalier is large, but the central sectors around Chantemerle and Villeneuve feel cohesive rather than sprawling.

The skiing here is defined by length. Many of the blues and reds run for several kilometres with relatively even gradients, allowing you to settle into your turns and hold them.

The tree-lined terrain also helps with visibility and gives the slopes a clearer definition, which is useful when you’re still reading the mountain.

There’s plenty of steeper terrain in the wider area, but it’s easy to avoid. You can spend several days here focusing purely on progression without feeling limited.

Alpbach brings a slightly more structured feel, which works in its favour for developing skiers.

The Ski Juwel area links Alpbach and Auffach with a network that naturally builds from blue terrain into more sustained reds. You can move through that progression without encountering anything too abrupt.

The slopes are consistently well groomed, which gives you a reliable surface to work on technique.

And then there’s the village itself. Alpbach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Austria—traditional wooden buildings, a strong sense of place, and none of the overdevelopment you find elsewhere. It changes the feel of a trip in a way that’s hard to quantify but easy to notice.

A final thought

This stage of skiing isn’t about chasing scale. It’s about finding places where the terrain makes sense and gives you the time to improve.

The resorts above don’t try to overwhelm you. They offer just enough variation, just enough challenge, and the space to return to the same slopes until things start to click.

You leave not having skied everything, but skiing better than when you arrived.

And from there, the next step tends to take care of itself.

But that’s not really the point.

What matters here is how it skis, and more importantly, how it feels over the course of a day. It’s a place that reveals itself gradually rather than all at once, and if you approach it expecting something modest, you tend to leave with a slightly different impression. We spent a couple of days skiing and filming here, and it’s the sort of resort that starts to make more sense once you see how it links together.

It also lends itself particularly well to shorter trips. The scale is manageable, the layout makes sense quickly, and you don’t need days to work it out. For someone returning to skiing, or arriving without much expectation, that tends to matter more than having endless terrain.

First impressions — more space than expected

At the top of the resort, La Norma feels more exposed than you might expect from somewhere this size. The terrain opens out, the views stretch, and for a moment it has the character of somewhere much larger and less contained.

This is where the steeper terrain sits, and where the skiing feels closest to what you might associate with a bigger Alpine resort. The runs have enough pitch to hold interest, but they remain manageable, never tipping into anything overly technical.

The shape of the mountain

What defines La Norma more than anything is the way it changes as you descend.

From those open upper slopes, the skiing moves steadily into the trees, softening both in gradient and in feel. The middle section is where most people will spend their time—cruising runs, a mix of blues and reds, and a layout that makes it easy to find a rhythm without thinking too hard about where you’re going.

By the time you reach the lower slopes, everything has eased again. The terrain becomes gentler, more forgiving, and clearly designed with beginners and families in mind. It’s also where the village starts to make sense, with its pedestrian layout and slightly self-contained feel.

What works — and what doesn’t

La Norma isn’t trying to be everything.

It has good vertical for its size, and there are solid runs on both sides of the mountain, but you do notice the traverses. They’re part of how the resort connects itself, and while they can feel a little flat in places, they also serve a purpose—particularly once you start looking just beyond the piste.

That’s where it becomes more interesting.
